Leading the team in RBI, hits, runs, on-base percentage and extra-base hits, Luis Rivera will be a key component for the team’s playoff run, hitting .306 since the All-Star break, Rivera looks to go into the postseason on a consistent note. So no sports betting for him.

Clones DH and catcher Ralph Henriquez is hitting .354 over his last ten games.

Matias Carrillo has walked only three hitters in 28 plus innings this season.

Mark Kohoon is 5-1 in six starts this season. Opponents are hitting just .233 off him. In 40 innings pitched, he also surrendered just seven walks.

James Fuller has a 3-3 record, but has a sparkling 1.75 ERA in six starts. He’s also pitched six innings in five of his appearances and has 40 Ks.

Brandon Moore has administered just three walks in 41 innings pitched. Hitters are batting just .190 against him.

Michael Powers has six saves in 10 appearances and has given up just nine hits in 12.1 innings.

Hitters:

Catcher Juan Centeno only has two hits in his last 33 ABs.

First baseman Sam Honeck has 14 hits in his last 40 ABs. He’s also hitting .349 in July.

Luis Rivera currently leads the team with 19 RBI, five stolen bases and a .417 on-base percentage.

Despite hitting .120 on the road this season, John Servidio has six homers, 14 RBI and a .282 BA at Keyspan Park this season.

Sure, his batting average cold be a bit higher, but I’m sure the Mets are more than happy with his on-base percentage and his RBI totals, especially considering the fact that he’s sharing third base duties with another former Cyclone in Matt Bouchard. In just 125 at bats, Lutz is fourth on the team in RBI and has the highest OBP of any player with more than 100 ABS. 12 of his 32 hits have also been for extra bases, making him a more than ample extra base threat. I said it before and I still feel the same way; if Lutz can stay healthy, he’s one of the best hitting prospects in the Mets system and someone that could be another Daniel Murphy-type player for the Mets in the future.

Scott Shaw- 2-3, 3.43 ERA in 11 starts with St. Lucie.

As always, Shaw is Mr. Steady and continues to have the type of control that will get him noticed as he climbs up the ladder. In 63 innings, the southpaw has 18 walks, not too shabby. Opposing hitters are hitting .246 off him as well. Is a call-up to Double-A in his cards sometime soon? As of right now, as signs point to yes.

Nick Carr- 2.82 ERA, three saves with St. Lucie.

After a miserable season in 2008 as a starter, Carr seems to have taken to the reliever role quite nicely.

Emmanuel Garcia- .279 BA, three dingers, 24 RBI with B-Mets.

Another guy who is bouncing back from a mediocre season last year. With dynamic speed and an Ichiro-like demeanor at the plate [he gets out of the box in a hurry], Garcia has the capability to be an excellent lead-off hitter. However, his strikeout totals remain too high. He simply has to take more pitches, or else, he’ll be more of a Lance Johnson-single-machine type. His 15 extra base hits and 47 singles so far this season are a testament to that.

DJ Wabick- .306 BA, one homer, 29 RBI with B-Mets.

A good contact hitter who can play the outfield and first base, Wabick has the potential to be a useful bench player in the big leagues one day. Needs to draw more walks and hit better against left handed pitching before that happens though.

However, after the season was over, Schilling and the organization parted ways and Schilling hasn’t played in the pros since.

Matt Smith- Stay healthy and consistent. His first dozen games with Brooklyn this season, Smith was an on-base machine. He drew long counts and wasn’t scared to take a pitch in a hitter’s count. He was so good that after about a week, it seemed like the Clones had found their temporary replacement Reese Havens. However, after about 50 ABs, he started to swing a bit more than he was before and all of a sudden, his batting average was under .200 and his on-base percentage was average, rather than stellar. Playing through a few injuries during the time, Smith’s season was finished, leaving the Aces to look for another shortstop in what turned out to be an injury-riddled season for both Smith and Brooklyn. If healthy, he can and will be a solid middle-infielder at the Double-A level and perhaps even higher, despite being known more for his glove than his bat. It’s just a matter of him getting in the at-bats he needs to show the Mets what he’s truly capable of.

Nick Carr- Bring down those walk totals. 5-2 with 74 K’s and a respectable 3.80 ERA in 2007 with Brooklyn, Carr was starting to look like a sleeper prospect. Shedding 25 pounds before the season, the 2005 41st round pick seemed to be beginning to understood what it took to be succesful in professional baseball. That seemed to go out with window last season in Savannah and St. Lucie, where his walk totals were beginning to become a bigger problem than they were before. Never having amazing control to say the very least, Carr was averaging a K an inning in Brooklyn and less than a hit an inning as well, which made up for his mediocre at best control. Last season in St. Lucie, not only were his strikeout totals down, but his walk numbers were up as well as his hits allowed. In order for him to continue to develop into a solid power pitcher at higher levels, those numbers will obviously have to change.

Luis Rivera- Hit for more contact. Aside from hitting .318 with the B-Mets in 2007 in just 17 games, Rivera hasn’t hit over .260 since he hit .272 with the Cyclones in 2007. Already a great defensive player, all Rivera has to do is get himself over .260 and he’ll be able to get himself to stick in double- A. After that, he just has to continue to work hard at the plate and who knows what could happen. Once looked at as a more than solid contact hitter after hitting over .300 in every season he spent in college and both seasons he spent in the Cubs organization, Rivera hasn’t been the same offensive player in nearly two seasons.

Subbing for injured first baseman Ike Davis who injured his foot a few days earlier, Jacobs was brought to Brooklyn to provide a jolt to an offense in desperate need of one and the leadership that comes with being a two-time New York Penn-League All Star. Hitting just .176 with three hits in four games with his former team, Jacobs’ time in Brooklyn didn’t go exactly as planned, but it did serve a purpose.

Alone in the Cyclones clubhouse after a 9-4 loss against Staten Island on Sept. 4, the shaggy haired catcher packed his bags and talked about his season with the same reporters that watched him slug 12 home runs and 46 RBI last season.

“I’m not hitting the ball as good as I was last year, but I’ve learned a lot,” Jacobs said. “The game is simpler and even though I still make mistakes all the time, I know what they are now and it’s much easier to fix them than it was before. It’s a slow process, but I feel like I’m learning and that’s what being in the minors is all about.”

Spending a week in Brooklyn has afforded the slugger the opportunity to work on his game and continue that process. Quickly becoming one of the boys, Jacobs grew a mustache because every one else on the team had been doing so for about two weeks in a ritualistic effort to get the offense rolling. While Jacobs insists he won’t let his wife see it when he gets home, he proved in a short time that he’s still the same leader in clubhouse he was last season and the year before.

His play on the field isn’t exactly what it was last season however. Before being sent to Brooklyn, Jacobs, In spite of a solid .380 on-base percentage and 20 walks, was hitting .223 with 14 RBI in 38 games with St. Lucie,. Because of those struggles, Jacobs relished the chance to get to work with a coaching staff that watched him flourish last season.

“My swing is not the same as it was last year at all,” said Jacobs. “The coaches here, [Edgar] Alfonzo and [Guadalupe] Jabalera know me better than anyone. The coaches in St. Lucie are just starting to know what to expect from me. Over the past week, I’ve worked really hard and I feel a lot better about my game and I’m looking forward to going back to work.”

Despite heading back to St. Lucie, Jacobs wasn’t about to dismiss his week back in Brooklyn or the two All-Star years that preceded it.

Instead, he deflected the attention to his now former teammates, believing that they have what it takes to do something the teams he was an instrumental part of didn’t- win a NYPL championship.

“It was nice to be back. I missed you all,” he said to the handful of reporters surrounding him. “This a great place to play and winning matters a lot here. Most of the time in the minors, it’s about development, so it’s fun to have that type of competition, it takes you back in college. But being back here for a few days, I’ve gotten an opportunity to play with some great guys that I’ve seen develop in just the week that I’ve been here. I’m looking forward to hearing about this guys taking it home this season.”

DemBrooklynBums.com: Most of the fans at Keyspan Park haven’t seen much of you this season. Knowing that, can you tell us a little about your game?

Seth Williams: Well, I’m a good defensive outfielder that has a big passion and love for this game. I’m not a real power hitter, more of a gap hitter with above average speed who likes to put the ball into play. I also love to win and I work real hard. In this kind of environment though, it’s not hard to get pumped up for a game. I’m loving it here. It’s really nice.

DBB: What’s so different about Brooklyn when compared to Kingsport?

Williams: When you think Minor Leagues, you think of really old stadiums with no one there. Kingsport is in the middle of nowhere and you get maybe a couple of hundred fans a night. You come here and it’s like the biggest stages and you have a lot of support. It helps a lot. In Kingsport, it’s harder to get locked in because there’s no nobody there. Here, there’s so much fan support and that makes it so much easier.

DBB: You said you pride yourself on being a good defensive outfielder. Is there someone at the Major League level that you try and emulate on the field?

Williams: That’s a tough question, but I’d have to say someone like Torii Hunter, who gives his all out there every night and isn’t scared of the fences and never gives up on the ball.

DBB: So you’re not scared of running into the wall for a ball either ?

Williams: No, but I’m happy it’s padded. That’s definitely a plus.

DBB: This outfield is kind of crowded now with guys like yourself and John Servidio playing reserve roles while Eric Campbell plays left field and Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Sean Ratliff sharing right field and center field duties. Where do you see yourself fitting in?

Williams: I was up here earlier in the season and I really liked it; I thought I fit in well here. I know I have to hit more though and I know I can. I’m just really enjoying the experience. I’m really happy to be here and looking to get a few more rips at the plate.

By the way guys, I sincerely apologize for posting two Q & A’s in a row, but just like the Mets Single-A Affiliate I write about everyday, I needed a break too!

Eric Campbell isn’t one of those players.

Hitting .283 with 13 RBI through the team’s first 35 games in ’08, the Brooklyn Cyclones third baseman/left fielder believes he’s just getting started proving what he’s capable of on the field.

At 6’3 and 220 pounds, many originally saw Campbell as a DH or someone who would contribute more with his bat than his glove and legs. After half a season in Brooklyn however, Campbell has shown a more than adequate arm from the hot corner and has even proved he could play left field when asked upon. The same thing can be said about his legs, which he’s used to get to balls down the third base line and up against the left field wall that no one thought he had any business near.

Modest and laid back off the field, Campbell is the kind of person that would have a problem telling the collective baseball world, “I told you so.”

He does understand where those same people are coming from though when they try to put a book together on him.

“It’s been like that my entire life,” he said. “After about 30 games, people begin to notice that I’m not a big slow guy.”

Much like the soup that bears his surname, this Campbell comes in many flavors. A lead-off hitter in High School, Campbell knows how to get on base. While his one homer in 35 games may not be eye-popping for a guy with his size and strength, his 17 walks and .392 on-base percentage are stats too big to fit inside a can of “Chunky Minestrone,” making him a hitter that can hurt you with a lot more than a long ball.

Originally looking like he was lost in the shuffle while Dan Murphy and Ryan Church were rehabbing with the team in late June, Campbell has become one of the main ingredients in the team’s offensive attack this season. With Zach Lutz still nursing a variety of injuries as well, it seems that Campbell’s playing time will only increase as the season goes on.

Campbell isn’t thinking about where he’ll be in the lineup once Lutz comes back however and is instead focusing on making the most of the opportunity that has been given to him.

“All I can do is go out there and produce when my name is called,” said Campbell. “Obviously, I want to be in the lineup every day, but I know if I start to do what I have to when they call on me that I’ll stick in the lineup. I think that’s starting to happen now.”

With the team finally back at .500 after a week or so of consistent baseball, players like Campbell will be counted on down the stretch if the Cyclones are to make the playoffs for a third consecutive season.

Confident his game will continue to improve, Campbell is determined to make a lasting impression with the fans in Brooklyn and help the team get back on track.

“Wherever they put me on the field, I have to continue to produce,” he said. “If I keep hitting the way I have been and can get even hotter, I know that I can stay in the lineup.”

Notes-

From the look of the box score, 2007 hero Jason Jacobs is back in town, which may be indicative to the seriousness of Ike Davis’ ankle injury he suffered on Monday in Staten Island. When the team comes back home on Saturday, expect a full-status update on Davis as well as a catch up with Jacobs, who is easily one of the nicest guys to ever put on a uniform in Brooklyn.
